Scope and content
Fonds consists of textual records: correspondence, original; wildlife conservation, original; manuscripts, notes, book reviews and printed matter, original; and documents of the War of 1812, transcripts. Fonds also contains 16 photographs, ca. 1900-1919, depicting sailboats at St. John, N.B., and at Toronto, Ont.; and a portrait of a Curé of the Ile aux Coudres. Three glass lantern slides, n.d., depict caribou and deer in Labrador. Fonds also contains engineering plans, 1891-1908, collected by W.C.H. Wood. These include: two illustrations of tide gauges connected with the work of geodetic levelling on the St. Lawrence River by the Department of Public Works; and Drawing 32 of the Royal Commission into the collapse of the Québec Bridge.

Biography / Administrative history
William Wood, historian, conservationist, born in 1864 at Quebec City, was commissioned in the 8th Royal Rifles of Quebec in 1887. After commanding the unit from 1907 to 1910, he retired with the rank of colonel. Wood was an authority on North American military history and a prolific writer. He authored many books, including five volumes in the Chronicles of Canada series. He also compiled the Select British Documents of the Canadian War of 1812 which was published in three volumes by the Champlain Society between 1920 and 1928. Wood was also interested in wildlife conservation and the preservation of historic monuments and buildings. He served on both the Quebec and Canadian Landmarks Commissions and on the Town Planning Commision of Quebec City.
